Engineering Rationale

Why 16-Inch Carbon Bed & 0.25-Second Residence Time?

The deeper carbon bed directly improves radioiodine capture efficiency under operational conditions.

⏱️

Longer Residence Time = Better Capture

Radioiodine capture by activated carbon is a kinetic process — the longer contaminated air is in contact with the adsorbent, the higher the removal fraction. The 16-inch bed at 500 CFM provides 0.25 seconds of contact time, approximately 1.8× longer than the standard 11.5-inch bed at higher airflow.

💧

Improved Performance Under Humidity

Nuclear-grade impregnated activated carbon's iodine removal efficiency degrades with high relative humidity. Longer residence time partially compensates for humidity-induced efficiency reduction, making the deeper bed configuration more robust in humid facility environments (>50% RH).

⚗️

Noble Gas Capture Enhanced

Noble gases (Xe-133, Kr-85) are more challenging to adsorb than methyl iodide due to weaker van der Waals interactions with the carbon surface. The deeper 16-inch bed provides additional residence time that improves noble gas capture, particularly relevant in reprocessing and fuel handling applications.

📐

Fold-Down Plenums for Ductwork Integration

Fold-down plenums provide a flat rectangular face connection compatible with rectangular ductwork runs common in existing nuclear facility HVAC systems, eliminating the need for round-to-rectangular transition adapters required when using standard circular duct collar connections.

🧲

VFD for Precise Airflow Setpoint

The included VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) allows operators to dial in exactly 500 CFM — or any other setpoint — without mechanical modification. This is particularly useful when the unit is integrated into an existing negative-pressure enclosure with a specific design airflow requirement.

🏭

Sample Unit Approval Process

For custom configurations, IAS manufactures a sample unit first (approximately 5 weeks) and ships it for your team's physical inspection and performance verification before the balance of 7 units are built. This ensures the delivered units match your design basis before production commitment.

FAQ

Custom Configuration — Frequently Asked Questions

Is the IAS-NC500-HI-CUSTOM equivalent to the Radiation Protection Systems PFC(H)-500 FM19?
Yes. The IAS-NC500-HI-CUSTOM is engineered to meet or exceed the published PFC(H)-500 FM19 specification across all listed parameters: 500 CFM rated airflow, 24×24×16-inch nuclear-grade impregnated carbon bed, 0.25-second residence time at rated flow, fold-down plenums, 304 stainless steel construction, HEPA filtration ≥99.97% DOP tested at 100% and 20% flow, multi-density polyester prefilter, Magnehelic 0–10 in. WG gauge, and 54×24×39.5-inch nominal envelope.
Why is the carbon bed 16 inches deep here vs 11.5 inches on the standard NC700-HI?
The deeper 16-inch carbon bed at 500 CFM provides a 0.25-second residence time — the contact time between contaminated air and the activated carbon adsorbent. Longer residence time directly improves radioiodine and noble gas capture efficiency, particularly under high loading or elevated humidity conditions. The trade-off is lower airflow rate (500 vs 700 CFM). Choose the IAS-NC500-HI-CUSTOM when your design basis specifies 500 CFM / 16-inch bed / 0.25 seconds; choose the IAS-NC700-HI when higher throughput matters more than extended residence time.
Is 500 CFM a hard requirement, or can the VFD dial down the NC700-HI to 500 CFM?
The NC700-HI's VFD can reduce airflow below 700 CFM — however, if you need the airflow rate of 500 CFM in combination with the 16-inch deep carbon bed and 0.25-second residence time, only the IAS-NC500-HI-CUSTOM provides all three simultaneously. Running the NC700-HI's VFD at reduced speed reduces airflow but does not deepen the carbon bed or increase residence time proportionally through the 11.5-inch bed. If 500 CFM is purely a safety margin or if your design calculation has flexibility, discuss your basis with our engineering team — there may be cases where the standard NC700-HI at adjusted speed meets your performance target.
Can inlet/outlet adapter flanges be custom-fabricated to match our existing ductwork?
Yes. The fold-down plenums on the IAS-NC500-HI-CUSTOM can be modified with specific flange patterns, bolt circle diameters, or transition dimensions to match your existing ductwork or existing plenum interfaces. Provide a dimensioned sketch, photograph, or CAD drawing of your interface requirements and our engineering team will incorporate it into the design. Custom adapter fabrication does not affect the 5-week sample unit lead time for standard custom configurations.
What is the UAE grid voltage, and is it compatible without a transformer?
UAE standard grid is 400V / 3-phase / 50Hz. The IAS-NC500-HI-CUSTOM standard factory motor is rated 380V / 3-phase / 50Hz — a 5% voltage difference that is well within the VFD's input tolerance range. No voltage conversion transformer is required for UAE (or most Gulf states) deployment. The VFD also acts as a voltage buffer, protecting the blower motor from supply voltage fluctuations. For other jurisdictions, confirm your supply voltage at order placement.
