IAS-TW10 Tritium Surface Contamination Wipe Monitor — No P-10 Gas

A portable counter for tritium wipe (smear) samples that needs no P-10 counting gas. Wipe a 100 cm² area, place the wipe in the instrument and read the removable tritium contamination in under 2 minutes.

Surface contamination / wipe monitor Portable, no P-10 gas Calibration certificate + CoC Updated September 2026

Quick answer

IAS-TW10 is a surface contamination / wipe monitor in the IAS-T tritium monitoring series from Iodine Air Systems. It counts 100 cm² tritium wipe samples in under 2 minutes without P-10 gas. Portable; calibration certificate and certificate of conformance included; price on quotation.

What the IAS-TW10 does

Tritium surface contamination cannot be found with a standard frisker, because tritium beta particles (maximum 18.6 keV) do not get through a detector window. The usual method is a wipe (smear) counted by liquid scintillation, which means cocktail, vials, a lab counter and a wait.

The IAS-TW10 gives a field result in under 2 minutes and does not use P-10 counting gas, so there are no gas bottles to carry or change. It measures a 100 cm² wipe, which is the same area as the US dpm/100 cm² convention. Readings are shown in kDPM/dm² (1 kDPM/dm² = 1,000 dpm/100 cm²), nCi/dm² or Bq/cm², with an alarm level that can be set anywhere in the range.

Know its resolution: stated accuracy is ±4.44 kDPM/dm² (±4,440 dpm/100 cm²) from 0 to 100 kDPM/dm², and ±10% above that. DOE's removable-contamination value for tritium in 10 CFR 835 Appendix D is 10,000 dpm/100 cm². Many NRC and Agreement State licensees use 1,000 dpm/100 cm² removable limits, which is below the IAS-TW10's low-level accuracy. The IAS-TW10 is therefore a fast screening and triage tool for higher-level contamination. For release decisions and routine low-level surveys, use liquid scintillation counting. Wet wipes are often preferred for tritium, since 10 CFR 835 notes that dry material may not be appropriate.

IAS-TW10 FAQ

Can a normal frisker detect tritium contamination?

No. Tritium betas have a maximum energy of 18.6 keV and cannot penetrate a typical detector window, so surface tritium is measured by wiping the surface and counting the wipe, either with liquid scintillation or a wipe monitor such as the IAS-TW10.

Does the IAS-TW10 need P-10 gas?

No. It does not use P-10 counting gas, so there are no gas cylinders to manage.

Can the IAS-TW10 replace liquid scintillation counting?

No. Use it for fast screening of higher-level contamination. Its stated accuracy at low levels is ±4,440 dpm/100 cm², so it cannot resolve common 1,000 dpm/100 cm² limits, and results near the DOE value of 10,000 dpm/100 cm² should be confirmed by liquid scintillation counting.

What units does it report?

kDPM/dm², nCi/dm² and Bq/cm². Because its measurement area is 100 cm² (1 dm²), 1 kDPM/dm² equals 1,000 dpm/100 cm².

How much does the IAS-TW10 cost?

The IAS-TW10 is priced on quotation. The price depends on options, quantity, power version, documentation package and delivery destination. Send the quote form on this page or email sales@iodineairsystems.com, and we reply with price, lead time and the list of documents supplied.

Is the IAS-TW10 available for US 120 V power?

Yes. Mains-powered IAS-T models are available in a 120 V AC / 60 Hz US version, and in 220–230 V / 50 Hz for export.

What documents come with the IAS-TW10?

A factory calibration certificate, a certificate of conformance, product certification documents and an English operating manual. A commercial-grade dedication support package is available for purchasers who dedicate the instrument for safety-related use.
